New findings from a study by researchers at Imperial College London

  • Omicron cases have 15-20% reduced risk of any hospitalization compared with delta cases
  • 40-45% reduced risk of a hospitalization resulting in a stay of one or more nights
  • 50-60% reduction in hospitalization risk with those have been re-infected
  • However infections in unvaccinated people shows less reduction in severity between delta and omicron infection, with a range of 0-30% reduced risk of hospitalization
  • Say ‘reductions in severity must be balanced against the larger risk of infection with Omicron’
  • Researcher Azra Ghani says that even lower hospitalization risk is ‘reassuring’, the risk of getting infected is ‘extremely high’ and says vaccines ‘continue to offer the best protection against infection and hospitalization’
