According to a study published in Nature journal, baby mice have the ability to recognise their mothers, much like human infants are able to. They are also able to form memories of their mothers that last well into their adulthood.
Researchers identified ‘social’ neurones that enable the rodents to distinguish their mothers from other, unknown female members of the species. These neurons contribute to the earliest social memories the mice are able to form.
