According to a study conducted at the National University of Comahue in Argentina, the number of bee species has been declining each year since the 1990s, with around 25% fewer bee species reported between 2006 and 2015 compared with records from before 1990.
Researchers ascribe the fall in the number of species to the destruction of natural habitats, heavy use of pesticides and climate change.
